Chief Mountain is a prominent towering monolith that stands alone on the eastern edge of Glacier National Park. Named for its commanding presence, it is known as “Nínaiistáko”, a name given to it by the people Blackfeet who have called this place home for thousands of years. The name translates to “Great Chief.” .
Over 25 years ago, me and my two best friends left our home in South Carolina on an epic journey spending the summer and fall working in Glacier. My grandmother, who at the time was in her 80s came and visited me. It was her first time visiting the Rockies and her first time flying in an airplane! Like so many people, she fell in love with the beauty and grandeur of Glacier. When she saw Chief Mountain, she said that the mountain spoke to her and that it was her favorite. She and I have this in common – a reverence for this special place that brings joy and fond memories every time I lay eyes on it.
