Greater Sage Grouse Courtship
Male greater sage grouse strut and drum on the eastern Montana prairie at dawn, attempting to attract the nearby hens. This is ancient annual ritual that draws the birds to the same breeding grounds (or leks) annually.
Historically, sage grouse were abundant across the American west. Today the population has dwindled, impacted by crop cultivation, conifer encroachment into grasslands, and other habitat alterations such as weed infestations which are linked to increased wildfire frequency and severity.
There are a variety of ways that you can help ensure this species survival - including supporting conservation organizations, programs and legislation that promote, support and protect native sagebrush habitat.
