The Dance - Lady Aurora & The Sleeping Giant
An exceptional show of the northern lights (aurora borealis) over the Sleeping Giant Mountain near Helena, MT . During late October and November of 2021, an uptick in solar activity was producing aurora shows across the northern hemisphere. Folks in Alaska, Canada and Iceland were seeing some amazing light shows. But in Montana sky watchers were not having as much luck. For me, several well-advertised and hyped forecasts for northern lights shows ended up being busts. . After two back-to-back failed attempts, my third try was a charm! Earlier the same evening that I captured this image, I had the entire family out only to see a dull green glow that was at most, unimpressive to my school aged daughter who apparently, I have shown way too many aurora shots from Iceland, Alaska, etc. However, later that same night I had the great fortune when our big mouthed orange tabby cat ran out of food around 4:30 AM and busted into the bedroom like the house was on fire! That woke and prompted me to check my aurora app to see that out of a scale from 1 to 9, the aurora level was at an 8.5 – levels I had never seen. I (fed the cat &) grabbed my stuff and caught the tail end of a real ‘wowzer’ of a light show just before dawn over the Sleeping Giant Mountain.
