Rise from the Ashes. A young 6-7 year old lodgepole pine rises from the aftermath of the Arnica Fire (c. 2009) near the shores of Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park. In some forests, lodgepole pine relies on wildfire to open the waxy 'serotinous' cones so that it can germinate new trees post wildfire.
