The frozen surface of Canyon Ferry Lake in southwest Montana – famous for its ice fishing and wild ice skating. Earlier in January, a cold spell that snapped record low temps in Montana, Canyon Ferry Lake left a 12-inch-thick layer of ice with incredible cracks and patterns. The sunrise forecast was promising and proved fruitful with a brief but intense orange blast that appeared to have been shot out of a cannon . I matched this unusually lit sky with a complementary shaped fissure in the ice for this image.
