Before Euro Americans arrived to North America, the Mountain Bluebird depended on nest sites in forest tree cavities excavated by woodpeckers. Today, many Mountain Bluebirds breed in nest boxes. Most of what we know about Mountain Bluebirds comes from studies of Mountain Bluebirds that inhabit human-made nesting sites.
