The CDT is a 3100 mile (4980 km) hiking trail from Mexico to Canada that follows the portion of the Rocky Mountains (NM, CO, WY, ID & MT) that divides the waters that flow to the Gulf of Mexico from those that flow to the Pacific. While still not considered complete, around 200 people attempt a thru-hike of the entire trail annually, taking around 6 months to complete. Seventy-seven percent of thru-hikers completed the entire trail in 2018. Most hikers tackle the trail from south to north. From MacDonald Pass, northbound hikers only have 364 miles to go before they reach the terminus of the trail at the Canadian border, having already covered 2687 miles of trail. The CDT, along with the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail, form what thru-hiker enthusiasts have termed the Triple Crown of long-distance hiking in the USA.
